My Approach
What is rooted is easy to nourish -Lao Tzu
Similar to the metaphor of the golden hour, I find inspiration for my counseling approach in nature. Just like a tree with a deep, sturdy root system, when we are more connected, grounded, or rooted – with ourselves, our community, our environment – we often find self-care and nourishment to be much easier. There are many forces in our society that make all these forms of connection difficult. My goal is to help clients find accessible pathways within their power to foster a greater sense of connection. This connection may be with their body, their values, their community, their passions, or simply, the nature in their backyard or local park.
I practice from an anti-diet, Health At Every Size® (HAES) perspective, and emphasize principles of Intuitive Eating, self-compassion, and somatics in my work. From my work with clients, my own life experience, and from ongoing education in the field, I am increasingly aware of the importance of nervous system regulation for positive, sustainable behavior change. Only from a state of regulation can we move towards a greater sense of connection with ourselves and our surroundings. Thus, I am a major proponent of the healing capacity of art and other practices that engage the senses to help clients move towards a feeling of relaxation (and improved digestion!)
Areas of Focus
I see clients with eating disorders* (including ARFID), general disordered eating, and those who have weight concerns, body image struggles, and/or a history of chronic dieting. I also enjoy working with people with ADHD as I have experience with this temperament myself.
Other interest areas include:
-
Gastrointestinal issues / irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
-
Blood sugar concerns (insulin resistance, pre-diabetes, diabetes)
-
Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and women's health
Note: I practice from a weight-inclusive or weight-neutral lens. I do not view weight as an accurate indicator of health, nor as something any individual has much control over. I understand that in our fatphobic society, clients may desire weight loss, but sessions are focused on behavioral changes to support holistic (physical, emotional, social, etc) wellbeing and individual health needs rather than weight loss goals.
